The extent of the ice coverage and the general ice conditions on the Baltic Sea vary from year to year. Successful and profitable business depends on regular and reliable marine navigation during all seasons. Arctia's icebreakers operate along the coastlines of Finland - and other countries as permitted by the fleet capacity - as required by the winter conditions, thus ensuring reliable sea connections for commercial use during the winter season.

The icebreakers assist merchant vessels in a variety of ways, such as opening fairways, towing, freeing ice-bound ships, and otherwise ensuring the general safety of winter traffic.

Depending on the ice conditions during the winter, the amount of work expended on icebreaking tasks varies annually, ranging from 500 to 1100 operational days.

Competition in the field has opened up, but we are currently the only shipping enterprise to provide comprehensive icebreaking services in Finnish waters.
At the moment the icebreaking activities of Arctia Icebreaking Oy comprise assignments carried out in accordance with the contract concluded with the Finnish Transport Agency.
