Ongoing development in icebreaking

Our aim is to provide ever better icebreaking services in order to assist in minimising transport delays and to ensure safe passage in difficult conditions.

Our primary task is to gain and maintain sufficient icebreaking capacity and expertise. The goal of Arctia Icebreaking Ltd is to become the most efficient and highly regarded shipping company supplying icebreaking services in the Baltic region.

IB Kontio as an EMSA oil recovery vessel as of 1 July 2010

The agreement which was met between Finstaship and EMSA (European Maritime Safety Agency) in November 2009 is unique. The traditional icebreaker has for the first time been offered other operations than traditional icebreaking. As an addition to the own resources of the member states EMSA offers them oil spill prevention capacity.

Concerning oil spill, IB Kontio is standby and her operations area is the northern part of the Baltic Sea. It is a three-year agreement with an option of three additional years.
