Arctia and the Finnish Border Guard strengthen their preparedness for environmental damage

Arctia and the Finnish Border Guard signed a memorandum of cooperation agreeing on collaboration related to maritime safety tasks. The agreed measures include, among other things, utilizing the oil spill response capability of the icebreaker Polaris in offshore response operations as part of national capabilities. Polaris also will continue to operate in icebreaking readiness in the Baltic Sea.

The icebreaker Polaris is equipped with a built-in oil spill response system that enables the vessel to recover approximately 200 cubic metres of oil per hour, up to a total of around 1,400 cubic metres without emptying the tanks.

Due to heavy maritime traffic, the risk of vessel accidents in the Baltic Sea is constantly present. The Baltic Sea is a particularly sensitive marine environment, which means that environmental accidents can have serious and long-term consequences. “We are pleased to deepen our cooperation with the Finnish Border Guard, through which we together enhance national preparedness for combating environmental and oil pollution,” says Maunu Visuri, CEO of Arctia.
