Icebreaker Nordica towards to the Gulf of Finland

Icebreaker Nordica departed from Kotka on 3rd of February and moved to assist merchant shipping in the Gulf of Finland. Icebreaker Kontio is already operating in the Gulf of Finland, while Voima, Otso, Fennica, Polaris and Urho are assisting merchant ships in the Bay of Bothnia.

Winter has progressed quickly, and Arctia's icebreakers have begun operating at a rapid pace. The last time a similar situation was seen was in the 2023–2024 icebreaking season, when Arctia's entire icebreaking fleet was already operating at the end of January.

“We are well prepared for the situation, and our fleet is ready to meet the needs of merchant shipping in all sea areas. Operational reliability and the smooth flow of maritime traffic are our top priorities, even in challenging ice conditions,” says Paavo Kojonen, Senior Vice President, Icebreaking.

“The icebreaking season has started at a fast pace, and the crew is heading into the season with great enthusiasm. Our goal is to ensure that merchant shipping operates smoothly throughout the entire winter season,” says Hanna Kujala, Master of icebreaker Nordica.
