Kontio heads to icebreaking operations in the Eastern Gulf of Finland
The icebreaker Kontio departed on 30 January to assist merchant shipping, first in Kantvik and Inkoo, after which the icebreaker will move on to the Eastern Gulf of Finland. Kontio is the fifth of Arctia’s icebreakers to begin operations during the current winter season.
So far this winter, there has been no need for Arctia’s icebreakers in the Gulf of Finland. In contrast, in the Bay of Bothnia, the smooth flow of merchant shipping has been ensured by Arctia’s icebreakers Voima, Otso, Fennica and Polaris.
Winter has progressed rapidly, and with the onset of severe frost, the ice is strengthening, and new ice is forming across all sea areas. Kontio is a rarer sight in the Eastern Gulf of Finland, as the vessel has mainly operated in the Bay of Bothnia.
