Arctia has signed an agreement for international charter

Arctia Icebreaking Ltd and Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation (“Baffinland“) of Canada, have signed a contract for an annual charter for the 2023 to 2025 shipping seasons.

The contract covers icebreaking services with one multipurpose icebreaker. The chartering will not affect Arctia’s icebreaking capacity in the Baltic Sea, as the operations will be completed prior to Finnish ice breaking season.

"It's great that there is demand for the world-class Finnish ice expertise after few quiet years in the international market. The contract brings work to a multipurpose icebreaker and its crew during our off-season," says Paavo Kojonen, SVP of icebreaking. "We hope that the contract leads to more international projects for the multipurpose icebreakers in the future."

"We are pleased to have entered into this new working relationship with Arctia," said Robin Nundoo, Baffinland’s Vice President of Sales and Logistics. "Their expertise and extensive knowledge of Arctic ice will ensure a safe and productive shipping season this fall. Like all vessels working with Baffinland, Arctia’s ships will be following our voluntary Marine Mitigation Measures in order to protect the Arctic waterways."

Baffinland Iron Mines Corporation is jointly owned by The Energy and Minerals Group and ArcelorMittal, and operates the Mary River high-grade iron ore mine located on Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada. Nunavut’s high-grade iron ore is among the richest iron ore deposits ever discovered. It can be crushed, and screened into marketable green products.

The Mary River Mine produces the highest grade direct shipping iron ore in the world. What sets this operation apart from many others in that the iron ore is crushed and screened on site, and then shipped directly to markets – no concentrating or processing is needed, and as a result no tailings are produced.
